The Agricultural Sector Again Gives a Share of Decreasing Inflation Rates in February 2019

Again, food contributed positively to the inflation rate in February 2019. Some commodities that contributed to deflation in February included race chicken and eggs. The price of these two commodities fell because the price of feed corn also decreased, following the big harvest of corn throughout Indonesia.

While attending the corn farmers’ harvesting activity in Gorontalo, on Friday (1/3) yesterday, President Joko Widodo expressed his pride because the national corn farmers production is now able to reduce imports from 3.2 million tons in 2014. Even in 2018, 380 thousand tons can be exported .

“It has become an economic law, if the production of farmers is abundant, prices will decrease. Therefore, to stabilize prices, we encourage exports,” Jokowi said.

Other commodities that also contributed to the decline in inflation are red chili, chicken eggs, shallots, gasoline, cayenne pepper, fresh fish, carrots and oranges. in January and February, vegetable prices in Indonesia are usually high. High rainfall causes problems in cultivation. Among them are high pest attacks that make the supply minimal and affect prices.

“As of now it can be overcome, farmers of vegetables (chili, onions, etc.) are able to cope the attacks by Plant Pest Organisms using technology and superior seeds. Therefore the harvest can be done in January-February, and get a decent price “, said the Head of Public Relations and Public Information Ministry of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture) Kuntoro Boga Andri, Saturday (2/3).

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution admitted that the government had a role in reducing prices
