The Ministry of Agriculture through the Directorate General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities (PSP) regulates licensing, distribution and utilization of pesticides so that they can be used wisely. The role of pesticides to save agricultural production from plant disease pest disorders is still very large.
Director of Fertilizers and Pesticides, Directorate General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities, Muhrizal Sarwani stated that if pesticides have risks to human and environmental safety, their use cannot be carried out by just anyone. Everyone who uses limited pesticides must have a certificate of limited use of pesticide.
“Certificates are given to people who have passed the training. The training is carried out by the holder of the registration number according to technical instructions and in coordination with the Provincial Fertilizer and Pesticide Supervisory Commission,” Muhrizal said, “Friday (2/22).
In Indonesia alone, the use of pesticides has been regulated in the Minister of Agriculture Regulation (Permentan) number 39 of the year 2015. Indonesian government sees that the paraquat formulation is still widely used because other cost-effective alternatives are not yet available. Woriedly, there will be protests implicating in the trade in paraquat-containing products in the future.
“As a commitment of the Indonesian government, Ministry of Agriculture in 2018 has conducted a study of the impact of using paraquat dichloride on health & the environment in Indonesia with a budget of Rp 2 billion. It has been done in 9 provinces, that are East Java, Central Java, West Java, South Kalimantan, Lampung, North Sumatra, Riau, South Sulawesi, and West Sulawesi, “Muhrizal added.
