The domestic palm oil industry faces various challenges throughout the first quarter of 2019. Even so, the Indonesian Palm Oil Entrepreneurs Association (GAPKI) said that the export of palm oil, in the form of crude palm oil (CPO), biodiesel, oleochemicals and derivative products, was able to reach 9.1 million tons in the first quarter of 2019, grew 16% on an annual basis.
“The palm oil industry faces challenges both from within and outside the country. At the beginning of the year, the oil palm industry was threatened by EU oil discrimination through plans to implement Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II). The EU’s RED II sentiment more or less erode Indonesia’s export performance. Not to mention the sluggish economy in the main export destination countries, especially India, which has a significant impact on the demand for the country’s palm oil, “said Mukti Sardjono, Gapki Executive Director.
In March 2019, Gapki noted that CPO and its derivatives export from Indonesia to India dropped 62% to 194.41 thousand tons, compared to 516.53 thousand tons per February. The slowdown in India’s economic growth which almost entered the threshold of the crisis was allegedly causing demand for Indian palm oil from both Indonesia and Malaysia to decline.
The decline in demand was also followed by African countries 38%, the United States 10%, China 4% and the European Union 2%. In the midst of these challenges, unexpectedly, palm oil exports to other countries rose 60% compared to the previous month. The significant increase in CPO demand and its derivative products from Indonesia came from Asia, especially South Korea, Japan and Malaysia

Industri sawit dalam negeri menghadapi berbagai tantangan sepanjang kuartal I 2019.
Pada awal tahun, industri sawit diadang diskriminasi sawit Uni Eropa melalui rencana penerapan Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II). sentimen RED II Uni Eropa sedikit banyak turut menggerus kinerja ekspor Indonesia.
